#630 // VENGEANCE IS GOD'S - LIVE
The joint venture theatrical production of V For Vendetta idolizes the violent overthrow of a corrupt government through miraculous acts of vigilantism and was released in December 2005 simultaneously in the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom. These are the very same police state powers that are now ascendant - and who are sharing their global espionage and censorship powers against their Constitutional Republic states.
V for Vendetta is set in the present day, some 400 years after Guy Fawkes' execution. The man wearing the Guy Fawkes mask seems to be impervious to attack, the mask bulletproof - and even unstoppable by mere mortal men and is known simply as "V". "V" is an antihero protagonist and speaks in clipped one-liners and wicked-iambic pentameter couplets - inciting his victims to be slaughtered - much as a little boy might pull the wings off a fly. In real life, Guy Fawkes' own acts of violence - sought to blow up British Parliament on November 5th 1605 - just as the British Monarchy buried Protestant Queen Elizabeth's reign and welcomed in the Catholic King James.
Much of the latent Catholic/Protestant hostility is lost on American audiences, because our cultural venacular doesn't invite us to remember Catholic reprisals of King James' day, nor the infamous barbarity of the Inquisition, but, instead draw our attention to the Hollywood-crypto-fascist religious reconstruction that project a sickly sweet, fearfully ignorant Pilgrim class who saw witches and ghosts around every corner - managing the order of the day.
