Is The Order 1886 Gold or Garbage?

The Order 1886 became released to some small infamy of poor reviews and heated detractors for various reasons (some deserved, some not) before fading into the shadows of relative obscurity, a largely forgotten Sony exclusive. But a closer look shows a game with high production values, competent (if somewhat unimaginative) gameplay, and a keen eye for detail and cinematically inspired story telling that coupled with visuals that were borderline groundbreaking for its time. Why then, was this game received so poorly...and did it deserve all the hate?
