Commercial layer farmers who attend livestock farmer field schools learn good farming techniques.
The use of antimicrobial medications is crucial for the treatment of diseases and is necessary to safeguard both human and animal health. Antimicrobial resistant microorganisms could originate and spread due to the misuse of antibiotics in the livestock industry, aquaculture, and agricultural production.
Farmers in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, Kenya, were completely convinced that employing antibiotics was a necessary element of their business before FAO began teaching commercial layer farmers there.
FAO instructed them on appropriate agricultural practices and how to further prevent antimicrobial resistance by enhancing farm bio-security through the Livestock Farmer Field Schools (LFFS).
The farmers gained firsthand knowledge about the feasibility of raising chickens without the needless use of medications, hence lowering antimicrobial resistance.
