Venom/active snake venom is a venomous snake's secretion that is synthesized and stored in the venomous glands. The glands that secrete the zootoxin are modifications of the parotid salivary glands and are located on each side of the head below and behind the eyes packed in a muscular sheath. The glands have large alveoli where the venom is stored before being expelled by ducts into the tubular fangs, through a bite. Snake venom is a combination of many different proteins, peptides and enzymes which are generally harmless when ingested. Snake venom is a complex mixture of enzymatic and toxic proteins, which include phospholipase A2 (PLA2s), myotoxins, hemorrhagic metalloproteinases and other proteolytic enzymes, coagulant components, cardiotoxins, cytotoxins and neurotoxins.
