How does a parent teach what they didn't do?

Every parent want their child to do something greater than they did. There are parents who had certain experiences that we know we don't want our children to experience. However, how do we discuss with our children to do what we say and not what we do. We will discuss the application of parents teaching their children something they didn't do.
