As a speaking coach, the two main reasons I see people get all weird and awkward when they speak about their business is that 1. they aren’t totally clear on who their ideal client is, and 2. they can’t explain exactly how they can help that ideal client.
This lack of clarity causes all kinds of confidence issues when someone is speaking about their business.
Because they aren’t totally clear on what they actually do in their business, they turn all awkward and uncomfortable when they try to tell someone what they do. They say um a lot and have long awkward pauses while they search for words, and then the words that come out don’t really say anything! An example of this could be something like “I help people relieve their stress.”
That is so vague and tells us almost nothing! What people? How old are these people? Male or female? What line of work? What is their family life like? What are their goals? How is their stress affecting their goals? What kind of stress? Where does that stress come from? What have they tried that hasn’t worked? What is your solution? How do you deliver that solution? How long does it take to relieve their stress? Where does this take place? What happens in their life when their stress is relieved? Why haven’t they been able to relieve it before now? Why would they come to you to relieve their stress?
If you aren’t crystal clear on who your ideal client is, and exactly what problem you help them solve,and how you solve it, you will sound like you have zero confidence in your business and people will sense it! They won’t want to work with you, and they won’t want to recommend you to their friends. Now they might have friends who absolutely need what you do! But if you can’t clearly explain what you do, they will have no confidence in your ability to deliver any significant results. And often they won’t have the slightest idea what you do in the first place because you talked in vague generalities and endless circles when you tried to explain it.
