Overwintering pepper plants

The chili pepper plant that I am showing how to overwinter is the bhut jolokia aka ghost pepper. First picking off all of the fruit, whether they are ripe or unripe. Next I removed the majority of the leaves and large branches. Once the plant was trimmed back and more manageable I used my Barebones hori hori to dig around the plant. The hori hori can cut through roots and also be used as a trowel for digging. After the pepper plant was dug up I trimmed the roots with my Fiskars garden snips. At this point I used the hose to rinse off the roots and pepper stem and leaves (it had spider webs in the leaves). You would want to do this as to not bring pests into the house. I prepared the plant for placement into the container by trimming more leaves and roots. I used the vigoro potting mix to pot the plant for the winter. Adding potting mix, placing the clean root ball into the pot, and then covering and shaking the rest of the container with the potting soil and throughly watering the container. This technique is different from last year when I just dug the plants up and placed them in the container with soil still on the roots. This will be the ghost peppers second winter inside and spring will be it’s 3rd year.
