Internet Censorship and Bill C-11 Update with Jay Goldberg

The internet regulation bill tabled by the Liberal government is currently progressing through the Senate of Canada after passing through the House of Commons earlier in 2022.

This bill, also known as C-11, was introduced to promote Canadian content.

The official opposition says that this bill will have the exact opposite effect if it passes.

Canadians have been signalling discomfort at the government deciding what is “Canadian content,” “journalism,” and the like.

Thousands of Canadian content creators have also been raising concerns about the bill. They highlight that “force feeding” Canadian content to viewers when if it’s not wanted, could drive down engagement on platforms. This would signal to platforms (like YouTube) that the content is not popular and cause it to be pushed down in international feeds. This would hurt the very artists that the Liberal government says it’s trying to help.

Jay Goldberg from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation joins us to update us on what’s happening with all of this. He recently appeared before the Senate talking about this bill and authored a report, “A Fatally Flawed Gateway to Government Censorship.”
