What to say when your child cries?

We all have been told or we tell our kids to "stop crying, are you a girl" or we tell them "boys don't cry" or we use a gender-neutral term, "Are you a baby? Stop crying". Is there a better way of handling this situation without making our children feel bad? Think of it, do we like it when somebody asks us, "Are you stupid?" even when we do something stupid. Similarly, as kids, we didn't feel good or our kids don't feel good when we try to position them in an inferior manner.
