Freedom At Bay

T'was present in the twilight of the day.
Future appeared to be "Come What May".
Past was rumbling 'round in hours spent.
Tomorrow formed by politicians hell-bent.

Bring me your tired, hungry, as well as poor.
Fair country of liberty has kept an open door.
Opportunities for success have long loomed,
but alas, the prosperous have been doomed.

The foundations of freedom are now shaking,
as droves of those needy leave profits quaking.
Shall we continue to support their every need
as on those who prosper they voraciously feed?

Rights of the individual have sadly taken flight.
Freedom has suffered with evidence of blight--
“I can do this, do that, and statements unheard”,
put forth by those considering choices as absurd.

Our freedom has been hijacked in a fruitless quest
by those who infuse our liberty with doses of jest.
