Josep Borrell's EU holds Russia responsible for Poland missile strike and 2 farm workers deaths

1. *The European Union’s foreign policy chief on Wednesday held Russia responsible for the "tragic" missile incident in Poland, calling the attack a gross violation of international law.*

"This tragic incident is a result of yet another massive wave of missile attacks on Ukrainian cities by Russia yesterday, targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure," Josep Borrell said in a statement. "These attacks are gross violations of international law."

"Russia continues to disseminate disinformation about the unjustified and unprovoked war it is waging against Ukraine. We will keep calling Russia out for its information manipulation and interference," Borrell added.

The United States and its allies have criticized Russia in the United Nations Security Council over its responsibility for a deadly missile strike in Poland, an event the UN’s political chief called “a frightening reminder of the absolute need to prevent any further escalation” of the nine-month-old war in Ukraine.

The meeting, which was previously scheduled, convened a day after a missile NATO identified as a stray fired by Ukraine’s air defences crashed inside Poland, a NATO member, killing two farm workers.

NATO and Poland said the missile was probably not a Russian strike, easing international fears the war could widen, although Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continued to insist there was no doubt the missile was not Ukrainian.

The deaths in the village near Poland’s border with Ukraine took place on the same day Russia fired more than 90 missiles at cities across Ukraine, aiming at its energy grid and worsening power blackouts for millions.

3. *Russia’s UN envoy Vasily Nebenzya on Wednesday said the West’s logic in blaming Russia for the missile incident in Poland is flawed.*

"Today, too, despite the obvious motive of the Ukrainian-Polish provocation, many representatives of Western countries spoke in the sense that even if Ukraine launched the missile, blame lies with Russia anyway as it’s destroying critical infrastructure," the diplomat said at a meeting of the UN Security Council. "The flaws of this logic is manifested with full force with respect to the irresponsible shelling of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which, as everyone here understands perfectly well, is the handiwork of Ukraine.".

78 people, mostly Israelis, were killed when their Siberia Airlines Tupolev Tu-154, flying from Tel Aviv to Novosibirsk, exploded mid-flight over the Black Sea.

The crash happened less than 300 kilometers (190 miles) from the Crimean coast. A week later Kyiv admitted that the disaster was due to the accidental firing of a Ukrainian missile.
Ukraine admitted that it might have caused the crash, probably by an errant S-200 missile fired by its armed forces. Ukraine paid $15 million to surviving family members of the 78 victims ($200,000 per victim).
