Two firefighters killed in bizarre runway crash with plane 🇵🇪

In a bizarre accident at Jorge Chavez Airport today, the main airport of Lima, Peru, two firefighters were killed when their emergency response vehicle struck a LATAM Airbus A320 taking of from a runway. There were no casualties among those on board. The firefighters responded to an earlier emergency at the airport, but hit the speeding plane head on.

The Airbus A320 with registration CC-BHB, a five year old plane, was in process of taking off for a flight to Juliaca. It was taking off on runway 16 when the fire truck tried to cross the runway at the very same moment. The pilots of flight LA 2213 probably didn’t even see the vehicle approaching at high speed and weren’t able to avoid disaster.

The right wing of the plane burst into flames upon impact, but because the plane had not actually left the runway, it was able to slide until it came to a stop further ahead on the runway. Other firefighters were then able to put out the flames, while passengers and crew were safely evacuated from the wreckage.
