Last night, astronomer David Rankin noticed in photographs a tiny dot that was moving very fast relative to the stars. It takes three observations to know the orbit of any celestial body. The dot was literally flying, so the three positions were recorded at once, and the computer figured it all out. And then - like in the movie "Don't look up. The team could not believe their eyes: the object will fall on the northern part of the United States in 100 minutes...

Of course, a slight panic - what kind of object, what size, what will happen in a hundred minutes? The asteroid in the picture is just a dot. And its only characteristic is brilliance. Can you tell the size from the luster? You can, although it's inaccurate. Look, we know the orbit. That means we know the distance to the asteroid. It's shining in the reflected light of the Sun. So we need to know its reflectivity (it's called albedo). How much from the Sun it received, how much it was able to reflect - and from these figures we can roughly estimate the diameter.

The reflectivity of asteroids varies, but there are very few very bright ones. So for a rough estimate, we can assume that it reflects only a few percent of the light. We did the calculations and it turned out that its size is only about a meter. That's a relief. A one-meter asteroid would certainly tear the sky in two, but it is unlikely to destroy anything. When the fear receded, pride came: look what a tiny object was spotted.

It was supposed to fall somewhere on the Canada-U.S. border at 12:30 p.m. Moscow time on Saturday. And there it was! People heard a terrifying rumble. One person writes that "the house shook." Another says that he woke up to dishes going around in the closet, the house was shaking, "and I could have sworn the roof was jumping too." The body was caught on surveillance camera in Toronto. The camera is aimed at the famous television tower. And so a fireball slowly flew in the background of the TV tower. Slowly, because it was almost tangential to the Earth. Eyewitnesses say it was green.

We have no reports yet that the asteroid actually fell and didn't completely burn up. But it's supposed to. Somewhere in the Great Lakes region of the United States.
