Hovercraft - An ultimate all terrain vehicle
Perhaps the most famous hovercrafts were those that, until the year 2000 when the Channel tunnel opened, carried passengers across the English Channel in a half hour.
But they're also used in some rescue and military operations and of course for recreation; what could be more fun than zipping around on a cushion of air?
The ultimate all-terrain vehicles, hovercraft can move over slippery, boggy, or bumpy land, not to mention over water.
The craft creates lift with a powerful fan that forces air underneath it.
This pressurized air is mostly contained within a flexible skirt.
Most hovercraft have a propeller at the rear to create thrust, propelling them forward as they push air back.
Rudders mounted at the fan's outlet direct the flow of this air.
By manipulating the angle of the rudders, the pilot is able to control the craft's direction.
Like the wheel before it, the hovercraft makes travel faster and easier by minimizing surface friction.
