We speak to Terry Lynn Karl, a war crimes and human rights investigator, about the El Mozote massacre, one of the worst massacres in modern Latin American history committed by US-backed right wing militias during the civil war in El Salvador. She discusses the Reagan Administration’s arming of the El Salvadoran army despite widespread human rights abuses and creation of death squads, the events leading up to the massacre itself, how the US and the El Salvadoran military covered up the massacre and even denied it had happened in the first place, the role of figures such as Elliott Abrams in the atrocities committed in Latin America, whose career would be revived when he became Donald Trump’s Special Representative for Venezuela and much more.
