How can you get salt and fresh water from a single source? James is making a strong point and further states figs and olives or grapes do not come from the same tree. Just like sin and righteousness cannot live together. In the examples James gives, he does not say figs are good and olives or grapes are bad. What he is saying is that the fruits you produce are deeply rooted in your heart and is the single source of your whole spiritual being. So whatever is in your heart will come out of your mouth. If your heart is the single source, then only good fruit should come from it. That is, if and only if you are following the Lord Jesus Christ and love Him with all your heart, mind, soul and strength. If you want to produce good fruits, let the Lord Jesus Christ change your heart to only produce good fruits.
