Charles Remey's tomb in Lorton, Virginia was never used. So why does it lay in ruins?

This tall, cross-shaped memorial in the woods near Pohick Church in Lorton, Fairfax County, Virginia is all that remains of an ambitious tomb conceived by architect Charles Mason Remey (1874-1974). Remey, who is buried in Italy in a decidedly more humble grave, envisioned his "Remeum" to include plumbing, electric lights, courtyards, chapels, and marble statues. It was only partially completed before local youths claimed it as their own and destroyed the interior. No matter what measures were taken, determined explorers always found a way inside. So, after years of neglect, the church simply buried the whole site under a mountain of dirt. Trespassers beware... #virginia #abandonedplaces #abandoned #urbex
