And, yes they could have not killed this creature, but remember it, it's pitch dark and it's a military operation aka a war like situation and you don't carry a tranquilizer with you... moreover if a tiger or a lion come in front of you in pitch dark you won't think twice and shoot at it as you can't run faster than a beast... sometimes it's easier said than done to not kill something in situations like this... think about it...
