Shutting down the Master Chief Collection | Halo

Master Chief Collection - How long has it got? When will it be shut down? In this video I discuss how long the master chief collections multiplayer servers will remain online for. Microsoft need to generate money from it and at some point in the future these servers will be shut down for ever. The only question remains is how far away that day is. Halo, and Xbox fans, would love the games to always be available but there are real world costs to running these services. Can Microsoft really afford to run the Master Chief Colleciton as a marketing exercise?

With the news that Ubisoft are deactivating online services for some of their older games the question gamers everywhere are asking is how long do I have left? There are also questions regarding ownership of games, digital vs physical

This debate is really tied up in how long you expect the MCC multiplayer to remain playable for? If it's a long long time then it needs a funding model which will support it. without at least some revenue stream from it eventually, possibly sooner rather than later it will close.

This also brings in to sharp relief the difference between buying digital vs physical games.
As games become more live service how long is a company obligated to keep a service live for?
Users increasingly spending money on cosmetic items which can only be used in that game so when the servers shut down they lose that investment. You could argue that they have has the use of it throughout the lifecycle of the game and therefore the company have delivered on their promise for that item. The gamer is essentially renting the digital item for the duration of the games lifecycle.
