Theological Dragons

Among the lore and legends that involve dragons, some indicate a living population of reptilians but others are a bit odd. What are we to do with dragons that have magic powers and play a role in particular pantheons or religious traditions (including the Bible)? Are they just make-believe figures or something much more real?
