In 1826, a man named William Morgan announced that he was publishing a book exposing the secret fraternity, after being denied entry to a lodge in New York. He was arrested twice for dubious and petty charges by a masonic sheriff, and was then kidnapped by a group of masons, taken in a carriage to Old Fort Niagara, never to be seen again...
