LIVE TRIAL COVERAGE, DAY 1: Police Killing of Atatiana Jefferson: Murder or Self-Defense?

On October 12, 2019, at 2:30AM then Ft. Worth police officer Aaron Dean responded to a call by a concerned neighbor for a welfare check on a home with the front door left open and the lights on.

While investigating around the outside of the home with a flashlight, Dean observed a person with a gun inside the home, just feet away. Dean ordered the person to drop the gun, then quickly fired a single shot. That single shot killed Atatiana Jefferson, who was in the home babysitting her 8-year-old nephew.

Within two days Dean had been charged with murder, and within four he had resigned his position as a police officer.

After a series of many delays, the murder trial of Dean begins today, December 5, 2022.
