In my humble opinion real world desensitization such as this is the only way your dog will understand how to behave in public and become desensitized around distractions. If you never do something in life how can you be good at it? The same goes for our dogs. If you do not give them real world experience they will not learn. There are ways you can build your dog up to this prior to taking them out in public but in the end to create that perfect canine companion y'all are looking for, the dog that is stable and non reactive in public you must let them actually experience the world around them.
