Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk said on Wednesday that his team have the hunger and the desire to go all the way at the Qatar World Cup and win a world title for the first time in their history.

The Dutch have come close - they have made three finals, but lost them all and have also reached the semi-finals at two further tournaments, the most recent at Brazil 2014 when they were beaten on penalties by Friday's opponents, Argentina.

Van Dijk said the squad was focused on the match and are not looking for revenge against Lionel Messi and company.

"I don't feel that extra feeling of settling anything," he said. "We just want to go out there and show our quality, show the team spirit, show the togetherness that we have and progress, hopefully, to the next stage."

"We know that we are three games away from glory," he added. "We want to perform and leave it all on the pitch and hopefully get success. And this is our opportunity and hopefully we can enjoy the opportunity and go through as well."
