What David Goggins' Vacations Look Like
Are you familiar with David Goggins? Everyone knows the all-American powerhouse, the ex-Navy Seal turned ultrarunner, Badass former world record holder for pull-ups.
If you haven't heard of him, go to YouTube and look him up. You will be impressed; that is a guarantee. The word "quit" doesn't really make sense to him. He is one of the select few who talks the talk and walks the walk.
David Goggins was born in New York City in 1975. Goggins was made to work at the skating rink that his father owned when he was only six years old, alongside his mother and brother. In the book Can't Hurt Me, he describes escaping with his mother from his alcoholic father to Brazil, Indiana, after enduring constant and severe violence at his hands. Before joining the Navy, Goggins worked as a fumigator for pest control.
In 2001, after three failed tries owing to severe injuries, Goggins successfully completed Buds training. He was assigned to Seal Team 5 as a Combatant Seal Swimmer after completing Seal Qualification Training and a six-month probationary term. Goggins served in Iraq and Afghanistan during the course of his 20-year military tenure. Goggins graduated from Army Ranger School in 2004 and was named a "Enlisted Honor Man." In 2008, Runner's World called him a "Hero of Running."
But have you ever wondered what David Goggins’ vacation looks like? The holiday season is here, and David Goggins was recently spotted on the Joe Rogan podcast, where he shared how he takes his vacation.
When asked by Joe Rogan, “Do you go on vacations?” Goggins said, “No. Never.”
Goggins explained that he has little resets throughout the day that he treats like mini vacations.
“I call them mental aid stations,” he said. “When I'm in the shower. It's a mental aid station. I don't think about sh*t. I don't f*cking think about people. I don't think about work. I don't think about running. I don't think about working out. When I'm in the car, another mental aid station; when I'm eating, mental aid station.
“So you have little mini vacations?” Rogan asked to which Goggins replied, “Mini vacations, man. All day long. All day long.”
So, what does a typical day for the toughest man on planet look like?
Goggins wakes up at 3 a.m. and then decides whether to run or begin his stretching exercise immediately. He claims to have skipped only 2 days of stretching in the past six years, and he stretches for approximately two hours each day.
Goggins stresses the need to avoid the snooze button. The first victory of the day is yours if you keep from hitting the snooze button, as his philosophy revolves around completion. He runs every morning, but the time of day fluctuates depending on his mood, he says. He tells how he sometimes crosses his running shoes three or four times in the morning, each time staring at them as he convinces himself to begin. Typically he runs 10 to 15 miles in the morning depending on whether or not he's training for an event.
By 11 a.m., he's been hit by the fitness bug once more, and he'll go for a 5-mile run to get his blood pumping before lunch.
Goggins practices intermittent fasting because he believes it helps him control his energy levels. Even when he wakes at 3 a.m., he does not break his fast until after his morning exercise. He usually eats blueberries and steel-cut oats for breakfast and then only one more meal in the evening.
Even though his daily programme includes enough exertion to seriously injure an Olympic athlete, Goggins nevertheless listens to his body. Sunday is his day off, which he uses to recoup from the stress he places on himself throughout the week.
He spends the afternoon at the office, writing, planning motivational speeches, and managing his successful business. He is a sought-after speaker and an elite athlete. His typical workday ends at 4 p.m., at which point he cycles the 25-mile distance home. After returning home, you might believe he's done, but he immediately laces up his shoes and runs another 5 to 6 miles.
After dinner, he reads until he falls asleep, which is generally around 10 p.m.
