Simply put: Gematria is the practice of coding numbers into words. It is an ancient practice that traces back to at least the Hebrew and Greek languages, in which they used letters from the alphabet as numbers.
Gematria comes from the Kabbalah. The central belief is that God created the world with language, by combining the number with the letter with the word. This is expressed in the foundational text of Kabbalah, the Sepher Yetzirah, or in English, The Book of Formation.
