Chicken Coop Foundation

Today is day 5 of our off grid hyperadobe chicken coop tower build and today we had a change of plans for the chicken coop foundation.

Hi and welcome! We are Douglas and Keri and we recently quit our jobs, sold everything, and in September of 2022 we took a leap of faith and moved onto our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our off grid homestead property with our two rebels, Willow & Zoey and our 16 y/o kitty, Boo.

We have been debating the foundation for several days now and finally made up our minds! Since we are placing this coop directly on bedrock (it’s hard to tell in the video, but that dirt you can see is a very thin layer and beneath it is solid bedrock!), we decided to use the ABUNDANT rocks we have on the property as the foundation instead of having to sift for gravel or have gravel delivered. Douglas decided on a lime mortar to set the stones. We are using the foundation to bring the coop to level (you’ll see our plumb lines all over the place!) and once that foundation is up to level, we can start laying our earth bags!

Since there wasn’t much else to say in the video, we are keeping this one short and you can see a bit of our process to get this started.
