With all the reasons for the Fall of Rome, one big reason is strangely often overlooked, namely the damaging deeds of one single man: Flavius Ricimer, the supreme general of the Western Roman Empire. In a time where the Western Roman Empire faced countless problems, from germanic invasions, to endless civil wars, the empire would have needed a powerful, unifying, benevolent person. Instead, it got Ricimer. He killed the last best hope of the Western Roman Empire, namely the emperor Majorian, who had almost managed to restore Western Rome. It is speculated that he had the next emperor killed because he was dissatisfied with him. In 468 then, he likely sabotaged a united Eastern and Western Roman effort to reconquer Vandal Africa, by probably killing the able commander Marcellinus, who would have been instrumental in this operation. Afterwards he sacked the city of Rome in 472, causing tens of thousands of Romans to die, and killing the Western Roman Emperor Anthemius, who was after Majorian a very able emperor who might have stabilized Rome. After Ricimer then died in 472, he left the Western Empire in such an utterly desolate state, that only four years later, it dissolved.
