Another topic where a lot of oversimplification occurs, when trying to understand the transformation of the late roman empire towards the middle ages, is the topic of the decline of paganism, and the simultaneous rise of Christianity. We can often read or hear things like: Constantine, after winning the battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312, made Christianity the dominant religion of the empire, and in 394 AD, emperor Theodosius would ban Paganism, so that not long afterwars, Paganism all but ended. As is the case with the oversimplification of how the western roman empire ended, where we saw that actually the date of 476 AD is only one of multiple possible dates for the fall of the western roman empire, or where we saw that the city of Rome even experienced some sort of golden period after the supposed fall, here too, we shall see that many oversimplified statements are circulating around on the internet.
