Did God Have To Suffer To Save Humanity?

As Christians, we focus on the Cross which is understandable. We talk about Jesus' words, work, and suffering on the Cross. With Christ's suffering, we even talk about the Passion of Jesus Christ. The question to ask is "Why?" Why suffer? Did God have to suffer to save humanity or was it just an option?
