Gene-editing technologies such as CRISPR should improve therapeutics, and allow us to "gain understanding" of vaccines at some point; we may literally be able to create them in months.

The Human Genome Project was completed in 2005.
2012: CRISPR was discovered.
If you get into the cells of interest, you can make genetic corrections.
2019: Human trials started using the molecular scissors of CRISPR (Cas-9) to start solving sickle cell disease, "so we're really on the verge of a direct human benefit."
