It is commonly taught that the Western Roman Empire fell in 476 AD, a notion that is very oversimplified. In reality, not much changed in 476, and the Western Roman Empire was by that time only an empire by name, and the emperor did not hold real power any more. But when the last emperor was deposed, nothing changed for Rome. Rome did not suddenly turn into a field of ruins. In fact, by that time, Rome still had 2 to 300,000 inhabitants, and despite having been sacked three times in the fifth century, in 410 by the Visigoths, in 455 by the Vandals and in 472 by Ricimer's barbarian soldiers, the city recovered every time, and many of the damages were actually repaired by the urban prefects. Yes, urban decay was starting, especially in the outer lying parts of Rome, but the inner core was well maintained and repaired even after 476. Rome would have looked still very magnificent even after it supposedly fell. Only after 536 did the city start to deteriorate fast, when the Gothic wars devastated the city, reducing the population to 30,000 and utterly destroying anything that was left of the old roman aristocracy and institutions.
