Why was Jesus born of a virgin?

Undoubtedly one of the most well-known stories of the New Testament, the virgin birth of Mary was a supernatural event that brought the Saviour into the world. Without a man's involvement, Mary conceived and bore a son, that the Bible referred to many times as the "Son of God".

Why was this peculiar process necessary to bring Jesus into the world? What purpose did it serve?
