This medication is also a common prescription for the treatment of additional mental health disorders and conditions including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), (premenstrual dysphoric disorder), and social anxiety disorder. Commonly called "Zoloft," this medication falls under a category of medications called SSRIs. SSRIs are medications that are believed to restore serotonin in the brain. Depression is believed to be caused by low levels of serotonin. Restoring this hormone in the brain is thought to improve symptoms of depression. ZOLOFT and other antidepressant medicines may cause serious side effects. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms, or call 911 if there is an emergency. Zoloft is available by prescription only. Sertraline is available under the following different brand names: Zoloft. Sertraline is used to treat depression, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder (social phobia), and a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (premenstrual dysphoric disorder).This medication may improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level and may help restore your interest in daily living. It may decrease fear, anxiety, unwanted thoughts, and the number of panic attacks. Sertraline is known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It works by helping to restore the balance of a certain natural substance (serotonin) in the brain. Zoloft (sertraline) is a good and safe antidepressant that is also used to treat other psychiatric disorders such as panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder. Zoloft is an antidepressant that belongs to a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which works by balancing serotonin levels in the brain and nerves. Zoloft is used to treat some types of depression, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder (PD), and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The active ingredient of Zoloft is sertraline, which is also the generic version of Zoloft. A generic drug is considered to be as safe and effective as the original drug. And generics tend to cost less than brand-name drugs. Sertraline is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (bothersome thoughts that won't go away and the need to perform certain actions over and over), panic attacks (sudden, unexpected attacks of extreme fear and worry about these attacks), posttraumatic stress disorder (disturbing psychological symptoms that develop after a frightening experience), and social anxiety disorder (extreme fear of interacting with others or performing in front of others that interferes with normal life). It is also used to relieve the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder, including mood swings, irritability, bloating, and breast tenderness. Sertraline is in a class of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
