In the words of Canadian-American architecture, Frank Gehry, “architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness.” Through architecture, the old very much becomes something novel. It weaves together layers of harrowing passages through history, presenting a tangible part of the past. Standing before a medieval castle, it is impossible to not be transported back to the time of its inception. The spell of medieval structures enthrals, beguiles, and terrifies in equal measure, and therein lies the appeal. The question, however, persists. Why were they built?
