Mothra Retrospective - 01 - Mothra (1961)

Starting off our Mothra Retrospective we're going back to when Godzilla was on Ice! Toho decided to create other giant monsters! And one of them would be the giant moth Mothra, created by Godzilla director Ishiro Hando! A LOT of what went into Mothra was introduced here but...there are some things that make it feel rough.

Mothra herself just feels...generic. Like her look and size are all that matter but she just comes off like all the other giant monthers. The Twin faries, Cosmos, whatever you call them, have the LEAST amount of personalities compared to other versions and hardly do anything.

What REALLY stands out is the villain! a corporate business type who is so GLEEFULLY evil and is one of the worst humans we've seen in a Kaiju movie! He guns down a lot of the tribesmen who protect the Cosmo's to kidnap them. As things continue to get worse he keeps hold of the cosmos, even when it's clear he's loosing everything AND he shoots a cop which results in him getting gunned down just like the villagers he ordered executed.

Add in an out of nowhere Christianity reference at the end and...it's good...but Godzilla vs Mothra would perfect the formula.
