If you’re a WordPress user, then sooner or later you’ll need to know how to transfer files from your computer to your WordPress site. While there are many ways to do this, the most common method is via FTP (File Transfer Protocol).
FTP is a way to move files between computers on the internet. To use it, you’ll need an FTP client (there are many free and paid options available) and an FTP account with your web hosting provider. Once you have those set up, you can start transferring files back and forth between your computer and WordPress.
There are a few things to keep in mind when using FTP with WordPress. First, when uploading themes and plugins, be sure to upload them to the correct directory on your server. Second, always make a backup of your site before transferring any files, just in case something goes wrong. And finally, if you’re having trouble connecting or transferring files, be sure to check with your web host or look for answers in the WordPress support forums.
With that said, let’s take a look at how to use FTP with WordPress step by step. Photo by Vlada Karpovich on Pexels WordPress FTP Tips – How to transfer content from your computer to WordPress.
What is FTP and why should you use it?
FTP stands for “File Transfer Protocol.” It’s a way to transfer files between your computer and a web server. You can use FTP to upload new website files, download existing ones, or even edit them directly on the server.
Most WordPress hosting providers offer FTP access to their servers. That means you can use FTP to manage your WordPress site, as long as you have the right credentials. Many WordPress developers also prefer to use FTP because it’s a fast and easy way to work with WordPress files.
There are two main reasons to use FTP with WordPress:
1. To transfer files between your computer and your WordPress site. This is useful if you want to edit or download website files without using the WordPress admin panel.
2. To install themes and plugins that are not available in the WordPress repository. If you want to install a premium theme or plugin that is not available in the WordPress repository, you will need to upload it to your site via FTP.
Setting up an FTP account
In order to connect to your WordPress site via FTP, you will need an FTP client and an FTP account. Most hosting providers offer free FTP accounts with every hosting plan. Once you have set up your account, you will be given an IP address, username, and password which you can use to connect to your server via FTP.
There are many different FTP clients available, both free and paid. Some popular options include FileZilla (Windows/Mac/Linux), Cyberduck (Mac), and Transmit (Mac). Once you have downloaded and installed your chosen client, open it up and enter your hostname (usually the same as your domain name), username, and password when prompted. This will allow you to connect to your server and start transferring files.
Using an FTP Client To Transfer Files
Once you have connected to your server via FTP, you will be able to view all of the files on your website. The vast majority of these files will be located in the “public_html” directory – this is where all of your website’s content is stored. If you want to edit a file on your website, simply download it from the server onto your computer, make the necessary changes, and then upload it back onto the server in the same location.
Alternatively, if you wish to download an entire directory (e.g., “wp-content”), simply right-click on it and select “Download”. Your FTP client will then compress the folder into a ZIP file which can be easily extracted on your computer.
