I love the 80/20 rule, but when I first heard about it I had something completely different come to mind regarding how I want to apply it to my own life and home.

Don’t get me wrong, I use the original definition of the 80/20 rule in my home as well, but let me explain my favorite rebranding of this rule that I’ve come up with and use in my own home.

I like to look at the 80/20 rule in regard to items vs space.

Let’s start by looking at the big picture first.

When you walk into your home, how much space is there vs how much furniture and items there are?

As a general guideline, I like to have about 80% space for walking around, dancing with my kids, and even playing a board game on our living room floor. So that gives us about 20% leftover room for furniture.

Now, let's zoom in and look at a bookshelf. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to have only 20% of my bookshelf full…but I don’t want it to be 100% packed to the gills either.

So let’s flip the script and fill our bookshelves with 80% of books and the other 20% we can add some breathing space and place a few decorative pieces that light us up.

Now let’s zoom in even more and look at just one of the shelves. Even though this shelf is dedicated to only housing books, you still don’t want it to be 100% full. That makes it hard to put books away and pull books out.

Here is where that 80/20 rule comes in handy again. Fill the bookshelf 80% full and leave 20% space. Not only does this make it easier to put books away, but it also gives some breathing room for manifesting a new book you want into your life.

So when God blesses you with a new book, you have a place to put it…without turning it on it’s side and placing it haphazardly on top of the already crammed shelf.
