Can snow silence a rifle? protect your tip!

Can snow silence a rifle? I was curious if snow would muffle the blast of a high powered rifle. I didn't want any snow entering my tip so I used protection as we all should when sticking the tip into something unknown. after carefully applying a rubber over the tip of my weapon I firmly inserted it into the cold white snow. This is what happened.
