Installing A 3D Printed XEDUSA Strain Relief from BlueShell3D
In this episode, we show you how easy it is to provide better support for the Xedusa Plug-N-Play HDMI adapter for the OG Xbox with a 3D Print from BlueShell3D.
Thanks to the Behar bros, you can now get plug-n-play HDMI from the original Xbox fairly easily and inexpensively. From a design standpoint, one thing that is a bit of a miss on the Xedusa is that there is a gap between the bottom of the case and the ground. That means the connector on the Xbox must support the entire weight of both the Xedusa and your HDMI cable. While I plan on designing a 3D-printed case for this to address that issue to provide better support, Reventlow from BlueShell3D has released a basic adapter mount that he sells to address these issues. If you have your own 3D Printer has also made the files available on Printables.
I printed the adapter plate out of Hatchbox Green PLA on my Ender 3V2 Neo. From start to finish the print took under 30 minutes thanks to Chuck from Filament Friday, as I used his .28 layer height profile to complete the file. Overall it is simple to print and doesn't need any supports or other special features.
Once completed I jumped onto installing it onto my Xedusa. To remove the included screws, you'll simply need a 2.5mm Allen Wrench, and perhaps pliers or tweezers. I removed all 4 screws and hex standoffs from the bottom of the case, removed the stock plexiglass piece, and installed the 3D-printed bottom mount in less than 5 minutes. In the end, this supports the Xedusa much better than the stock unit, although it does seem just a bit tall for my liking. On my next print, I am probably going to reduce the Z-height to about 90% of what the default file setting was, this way it doesn't produce an upward strain on the Xbox connector.
Things like this are precisely why I got into 3D printing. The stock Xedusa has a slight design flaw, and it's addressable thanks to 3D printing. I'm continuing to work on my design, as I'd like to better support both the A/V connector and the HDMI connector coming out of the Xedusa. This is a great place to start and I appreciate Reventlow and BlueShell3D putting this out there for everyone to benefit from.
