First landing at Gibraltar Airport 2023

Gibraltar airport celebrated its New Years Day 2023 with a flight landing at 10:52 AM, an Embraer Legacy 650E. The first flight landing at Gibraltar on January 1 2023 flew in from Malaga, it was wither a private or chartered flight having just a quick trip down the Souther Spain Coast from Malaga to Gibraltar.

I love how these planes land on a tarmac that is surrounded on all sides by water. This is a must watch to see how close to the water these planes land and take off. There are very few airports in the world like this, that could support commercial airline jets to land and take off under such extreme conditions.

Gibraltar is one of the most dangerous airports in the world because the runway is short, it is surrounded by water on both ends of the tarmac, an international highway bisects the tarmac with cars, bikes and people on foot crossing. The weather caused by the Strait of Gibraltar can lead to brutal crosswinds. The pilots who land here have to be very qualified. Flights to Gibraltar are currently only from the United Kingdom because Gibraltar International Airport is technically a military airport not a civilian one.
