"Appalling, absolutely appalling " - speech from Sir Charles Walker MP on the Public Order Bill

"The Public Order Bill as it is "as unconservative as our budget of a few weeks ago"

Very powerful speech from Sir Charles Walker MP regarding the Public Order Bill that the government are (were) trying to sneak to restrict people's ability to protest. The government will conveniently play on public anger towards Just Stop Oil etc to bring these powers in, but the concern is that the powers will then be used to stop anything the government doesn't like. Peaceful protest will be quashed.

Suella Braverman Suella Braverman's amendment (NC7) would enable powers against people merely 'likely' to protest. Not actually protest, but possibly!

"the Secretary of State reasonably believes that one or more persons are carrying out, or are likely to carry out, activities related to a protest"

“There are plenty of existing laws that can be utilised to deal with people who specialise in making other people’s lives miserable”

“The governments attraction to serious disruption prevention orders demonstrates our own impotence as legislators and really the impotence of the police as law enforcers to get to grips with the laws already in place, and enforce them”

On his "it's nonsense" comment he said: "the idea that in this country we are going to ankle tag someone who has not been convicted in a court of law. Those Chinese in their embassy will be watching this very closely at the moment, they might actually be applying for some of this stuff”
