জন্মের পর তার নাম রাখা হয়েছিল অছিমদ্দিন।গায়ের রং কালো থাকার কারণে শিশুকালে মা তাকে আদর করে কালু বলে ডাকতেন। আর এই কালুই হল মহান সাধক সৈয়দ কালু শাহ ফকির।
