Robotics and artificial intelligence are increasingly proving their potential to revolutionize almost every aspect of human life, and law enforcement is in no way exempted. Advancements in Robotics and AI have now made robots capable of playing very vital roles in enforcing the law, not just in the labs and interrogation rooms, but on the front line of policing as well. For the first time in human history, a machine learning program that uses artificial intelligence is now able to accurately forecast crimes at least one week before they happen. Just as they’ve been driving change in healthcare and manufacturing, artificially intelligent robots are now being explored towards driving similar changes in policing. In this video, we’ve taken a deep dive into the present state of affairs with robots and AI in policing, and whether autonomous AI-enabled police robots are potentially the great idea that they’ve widely touted to be. The first ever robotic police officers were deployed across cities in China and Dubai in 2017. These first-generation robocops were essentially mobile information touch screens that passed general information to citizens and were largely present at airports and train stations. The Chinese versions, called AnBot, were pretty much a cross between R2D2 and Dalek, having facial recognition technology that could track potential criminals and forward their information to a central command unit manned by human operators. Unlike the Chinese versions, Dubai's first-generation robots were largely restricted to menial tasks but were more humanoid-looking.
