The undead Forsaken[1][2] (or simply the Forsaken or Undead)[3][4] are a race[5][6] and a faction[7][8] of intelligent undead who broke away from the Scourge and took control of much of the kingdom of Lordaeron,[9] destroyed during the Third War by the death knight Arthas Menethil. The Forsaken were formerly led by their founder, Lady Sylvanas Windrunner, the former Ranger-General of Quel'Thalas. Their capital was the Undercity, in the royal catacombs beneath the ruins of the capital city of Lordaeron, until it was destroyed and abandoned at the start of the Fourth War.

While comprised primarily of undead humans, the Forsaken are a diverse faction that include several different races at their biological core. However, they have all assumed their racial identity as "Forsaken," due to their shared goals and loyalties.[
