The fictional Cheng Yuanzhi, along with Deng Mao, led a force of 50,000 rebels against Han imperial forces to take over the Youzhou district. The force was opposed by the 500 volunteers led by Zou Jing. Liu Bei taunted the Yellow Turbans, spurring Cheng Yuanzhi to send Deng Mao into battle. Zhang Fei quickly stuck the warrior down in one blow. Cheng Yuanzhi furiously rode out to do battle with Zhang Fei.
Guan Yu, however, met him mid-way and felled him in one stroke, which made Cheng Yuanzhi the first victim to Guan Yu's Green Dragon. The Yellow Turban army, now leaderless, fled the field.
