Carrots contain a variety of dietary carotenoids, which are known for their antioxidant properties and ability to reduce free radicals in the body. Some studies have found that people who consume carrots regularly may have a lower risk of developing certain types of cancer. For example, one study found that current smokers who did not consume carrots had three times the risk of developing lung cancer compared with those who ate carrots more than once a week. Beta-carotene consumption has also been shown to have an inverse association with the development of colon cancer in a Japanese population. In a 2011 study, carrot juice extract was shown to kill leukemia cells and inhibit their progression. In addition, research has shown that natural compounds in vegetables of the carrot family, such as polyacetylenes, can have beneficial effects in controlling inflammation and reducing cancer growth in animals. Carrots also contain the anti-cancer compound falcarinol, which has been shown to reduce tumors in rats by a third. Some studies have also suggested that diets rich in beta-carotene may play a protective role against prostate cancer in men.
It's important to note that the evidence for the effects of carrots on cancer in humans is limited, and no single food can cure cancer. It's generally recommended to eat a varied and healthy diet to support overall health and well-being.
If you're interested in incorporating more plant-based foods into your diet for cancer prevention and support, our ABCD diet book may be a helpful resource.
