My Lucky Escape From a Whirlpool's "Drowning Zone"

This is how I survived getting caught in a hydraulic on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. I was held underwater for about a minute as the rest of the expedition looked on unable to get to me. I only survived because I remembered some advice that Laird Hamilton once gave me about how to keep from panicking and instead wait for the opportunity to escape. It could have gone south very easily--and I'm very happy that it didn't.
