Alfred Hitchcock's first hit THE LODGER: A STORY OF THE LONDON FOG (1927)

A landlady suspects that her new lodger is Jack the Ripper in Alfred Hitchcock's first thriller — the film that established him as a name director.
THE LODGER begins the themes of Hitchcock's future works, according to Phillip French, writing in The Guardian, Hitchcock borders themes of "the fascination with technique and problem-solving, the obsession with blondes, the fear of authority, and the ambivalence towards homosexuality," in THE LODGER.
This is the first movie in which Hitchcock makes one of his trademark cameo appearances. Here, it's as "Extra in Newspaper Office". He is also standing in a crowd as the leading man is arrested.
The movie entered the public domain in the United States in 2023.
