Worst thing one can do to an all matching collectible WWII K98K Mauser stock is any type of extreme cleaning, using caustic cleaners that even after its "dry" the cleaner continues to break down the wood fibers even below the surface, using wood bleach to lighten the stock color and/or etc. Also, sanding of any kind from hand sanding to dremel to bigger hand held sanders. Collectors do not want pretty they want honestly. Pretty yes if it remains that way for 80 years, but you are not going to fool the mid to experienced collector that will give top dollar or be impressed by the rifle you just ruined. In collectors eyes one is most likely ruining what would've been a collectible piece.
